Interview with Nutso

1/ First of all, for those who don’t know you very well, could you tell us more about you?

The name is Nutso, MC from Flushing Queens NYC. I been in the studio professionally since 1997, ran thru the underground, open mic’s, and still working hard to bring my audience a pure soundscape to the streets. I put my heart into each record and I work to pick the beats that will grab the listener to focus and break their neck so hopefully I been doing a good job and I will not stop!

1/ Pour ceux qui ne connaissent pas encore, peux-tu te présenter en quelques mots ?

Mon nom est Nutso, je suis un MC de Flushing dans le Queens à New York City. J’enregistre en studio de manière professionnelle depuis 1997, j’ai principalement tourné dans le milieu de l’underground, et je travaille toujours très dur afin d’apporter à mon public le son de la rue. Je mets tout mon cœur dans chaque disque et je m’efforce à choisir les instrumentaux qui captent l’attention de l’auditeur et qui lui feront se casser le cou sur le beat. J’espère faire du bon travail et je n’arrêterai pas !

2/ Our website is called Rap Engagement Consciousness REC, would you define yourself as an engaged or conscious rapper?

When u categorize things it takes away from the culture. I’m an MC so it should be always good to put a listener in a place mentally where they can say ‘dam this MC really is taking me to a place where I went thru this or I want to be’.. so if concious means ‘send a message’ then yes! if you say Gangsta ‘speaking the streets’ then yes! and if I am engaging..then yes! am I an MC..then absolutely YES!

2/ Notre site s’appelle REC Rap Engagé Conscient, te qualifierais-tu comme un rappeur engagé ou conscient ?

Lorsque tu cherches à catégoriser les choses, tu t’éloignes de la culture originelle. Je suis un MC donc il est toujours bon de captiver l’auditeur afin qu’il se dise : « P****N ce MC m’emmène dans un lieu où j’ai vécu ceci, ou j’aimerais être… alors si conscient veut dire faire passer un message alors oui ! Si tu veux dire un gangster qui parle de la rue alors oui ! Et si je suis engagé et bien oui ! Suis-je un MC…OUI absolument !

3/ Do you think the essence of hip-hop should always be about revendication (for example not accepting the Life the governments or big companies are willing to impose on us)?

Hip Hop culture is a way of life and the streets not catering to the systems laws of having fun via music. Laws are meant to protect us but we rebel when the system doesn’t want to listen. Funny is that graffitti used to be illegal but yet now you see it in commercials, on buses, mass transportation legally.. i guess when ‘they’ can make money from what we did, then it’s ok… kiss my ass, the streets already knew what was hot, but now they can make money off of us then it’s ok? Gov’t equals take from the poor!!

3/ Penses-tu qu’une des valeurs du Hip Hop doit toujours être la renvendication ? (par exemple ne pas accepter la vie que veut nous faire mener nos gouvernements et les grandes entreprises)

La culture Hip Hop est un art de vivre, c’est la rue qui ne se nourrie pas des lois du système qui veut que la musique ne soit que divertissement. Les lois sont supposées nous protéger mais nous nous rebellons lorsque le système ne nous écoute pas.
Une chose qui m’amuse est la récupération du graffiti, interdit à la base, il est maintenant présent dans les publicités, sur les bus, dans les transports publics de manière tout à fait légale (N.B. Aux Etats-Unis au moins)… Je suppose que lorsqu’ils peuvent gagner de l’argent sur notre dos ça devient légal…kiss my ass (pas de traduction, en français c’est naze), la rue savait depuis longtemps ce qui était bon, mais maintenant ils se font de l’argent sur nous ?!
Les gouvernements sont tous les mêmes, ils prennent l’argent aux pauvres !!

4/ Do you remember how hip-hop affected you when you were a kid?

Man when I first heard Big Daddy Kane’s ‘Long Live the Kane’ and my mom’s bought me the vinyl it changed my life right there on the spot! I respect the 80′s but I’m a 90s warrior so growing up with the Mobb Deep’s, Nas, Wu-Tang, ONYX, M.O.P., ATCQ sound it kind of brang me into the underground open mic world and I went in like a hunter and kept at it until I knew this is what I wanted to do!

4/ Te souviens-tu comment le Hip Hop t’a influencé étant enfant ?

Mec, la première fois que j’ai entendu « Long Live the Kane » de Big Daddy Kane et que ma mère m’a acheté le vinyle ça a changé ma vie sur le moment ! Je respecte les années 80 mais je suis un guerrier des années 90 alors le son de Mobb Deep, Nas, le Wu-Tang, Onyx, M.O.P, A Tribe Called Quest avec lequel j’ai grandi m’a amené dans les sessions « micro ouvert » du milieu underground, j’y suis allé comme un chasseur et j’ai persévéré jusqu’à ce que je sois persuadé que c’est ce que je voulais faire de ma vie !

5/ Who worked on your EP « King of the Project Hallway » and what can you tell us about them?

Jay Rock was the first artist to come in and lay it down and that set off this project. We then went to a solo song, then I went into Flushing to get my homie’s Mic G. & Royal Flush to kill the record for our hood. Did another solo song to then close out with a story that I wanted my homie Johnny to sing on..funny how things turn out that I found out he was from Flushing too!! We all had fun recording this and we’ll continue to work on more for yall.

5/ Qui a travaillé sur ton EP « King of the Project Hallway » et que peux-tu nous dire sur ces personnes ?

Jay Rock a été le premier artiste à venir poser et c’est ce qui a démarré le projet. Nous avons commencé par un titre en solo, puis nous sommes allés à Flushing chercher mes potes Mic G et Royal Flush pour représenter notre quartier sur un titre. Puis un nouveau titre solo et après je voulais que mon pote Johnny pose sur le titre final. C’est marrant comme j’ai découvert à ce moment là qu’il venait de Flushing aussi !! On s’est éclaté à faire ce projet et on continuera à le faire pour vous sur nos futurs projets.

6/ What message you want to pass on with this new EP?

I wanted to just showcase my versatility, story telling ability, street edge, show love to my hood, bring good people together, work with REEF, and put something of good quality music out with my name on it! I’ve received good feedback so far and plus we put 2 videos out for this 5 song project so I’m happy about that.

6/ Quel message veux-tu faire passer avec ce nouvel EP ?

Je voulais simplement montrer ma polyvalence, mon habilité à raconter des histoires, mon côté « rue », mon amour pour mon quartier. Je voulais réunir les bonnes personnes, travailler avec REEF et sortir un projet de bonne qualité musicale avec mon nom dessus ! J’ai reçu de bons échos pour le moment et nous avons sorti 2 vidéos pour ce projet 5 titres alors j’en suis très content.

7/ What are your upcoming projects?

As of right now we just released ‘King of the Project Hallway’ EP digitally worldwide, we have another release coming soon that will be FREE online titled ‘NY Knights’ which will be an EP with Panchi of the NYGz (signed to DJ Premier) and myself // out soon… then after that should be ‘Nutso:Guilty Your Honor’ album which we are pushing for Fall 2010. A lot of surprises on that and so far it’s coming together pretty nicely. I’m going in!

7/ Quels sont tes projets à venir ?

Nous venons juste de sortir ce EP 5 titres « King of the Project Hallway » en version numérique, nous avons un nouveau projet pour très bientôt qui sera disponible en téléchargement libre intitulé « NY Knights ». Ce sera un EP avec Panchi des NYGz (signés avec DJ Premier) et moi-même.
Juste après ça devrait sortir pour l’automne 2010 mon album solo « Nutso : Guilty Your Honor ». Il y aura plein de surprises et ça avance doucement mais sûrement.

8/ What does the number 7 represent to you?

The number 7 is just the train line that run from Flushing to Manhattan so when you hit the last stop…welcome to my hometown — > Flushing Queens!!

8/ Qu’est ce que le numéro 7 représente pour toi ?

Le chiffre 7 est juste le numéro de la ligne de métro qui relie Manhattan à Flushing donc quand t’arrives au terminus…t’arrives dans mon quartier à Flushing Queens !!

9/ What are your favorite professionnel memories?

Going from a street MC to actually recording in a studio and learning song structure, the whole process is a lot of work but also being on stages with some of the greatest artist ever was a professional and life changing moment in my career such as Redman, Beatnuts, The Roots, Craig G., DJ Premier, Blaq Poet, and so many more…

9/ Quels sont tes meilleurs souvenirs professionnels ?

Être parti de la rue pour arriver à enregistrer dans un vrai studio et apprendre l’écriture structurée d’une chanson, tout ce processus d’ailleurs représente beaucoup de travail. Mais aussi être sur scène avec quelques un des meilleurs artistes de tous les temps a été un moment très important personnel et professionnel, être aux côtés d’artistes tels que Redman, les Beatnuts, the Roots, Craig G., DJ Premier, Blaq Poet et bien d’autres encore a changé ma vie…
10/ France is the world’s second largest hip hop market just after the United States of America, have you got something to say to your fans in France? Any visit planned for the moment?

Yes i want to say whats up to all my B Boys & B Girls in France who have always supported me. Also want to shout out my Boy Dj Loscar, Dj Brans and Kaot’F as well!! As far as shows go contact Cuban at poorpocket@gmail.com for any Show Bookings in France..

10/ La France est le second marché mondial au niveau du Hip Hop après les Etats-Unis d’Amérique, as-tu quelques mots à dire à ton public sur place ? As-tu prévu de venir nous rendre visite prochainement ?

Oui je veux tout d’abord saluer tous les B Boys et B Girls en France qui m’ont toujours apporté leur soutien. Je veux aussi passer le bonjour à mes gars Dj Loscar (nouveau site en ligne http://www.djloscar.com), Dj Brans (projet à venir avec Nutso) et Kaot’F aussi !!
